Support Lesbiens occupy a unique position in Czech music history as the first domestic act to achieve massive commercial success while singing exclusively in English. Formed in 1992, they initially faced skepticism from a press corps that viewed English-language lyrics from Czech artists as a barrier to authenticity.
However, their breakthrough album Regeneration? proved that their sound was globally competitive, blending alternative rock, funk, and pop into a high-fidelity package. The departure of co-writer Jaromír Helešic marked a significant stylistic shift, moving the band away from their grungier roots toward a more 'modern' and 'refined' sound that incorporated electronic and nu-jazz elements. Critically, they are noted for their high production values and the extravagant, surrealist image of frontman Kryštof Michal. Their influence is felt in the wave of Czech 'crossover' bands that followed, bridging the gap between underground alternative scenes and mainstream radio dominance. Despite being occasionally mislabeled as New Age by early databases, their core identity remains rooted in dynamic, guitar-driven rock with a sophisticated rhythmic backbone.
