Surface to Air Missive

Surface to Air Missive is the primary creative vehicle for Tallahassee-based multi-instrumentalist Taylor Ross. Emerging in 2013 via Leaving Records, the project gained immediate attention for being the first rock-oriented release on the hip-hop and electronic-leaning Stones Throw subsidiary.

The sound identity is defined by a highly technical approach to songwriting that blends the melodic sensibilities of 60s sunshine pop with the structural complexity of progressive rock and the textural intimacy of bedroom lo-fi. Ross often handles the majority of instrumentation, characterized by clean, interlocking guitar lines and the frequent use of woodwinds like the recorder, which lends a pastoral, 'olde-world' quality to the music. Critically, the band is often compared to acts like Gentle Giant or The Zombies, yet they maintain a contemporary art-punk edge.
