Sweetwater

Psychedelic folk with a sophisticated jazz heart. Cello, flute, and soulful vocals create a lush, organic soundscape that feels like a sunset over a 1960s canyon.

Intro

Sweetwater occupies a unique and somewhat tragic position in rock history, famously known as the band that was supposed to open Woodstock but was delayed by traffic. Formed in Los Angeles in 1968, their sound was a radical departure from the guitar-heavy psychedelic rock of the era.

By replacing the standard lead guitar role with a combination of cello (August Burns) and flute (Albert Moore), and incorporating a heavy Latin influence via Elpidio Cobian's congas, they pioneered a 'chamber-psych' sound that predated much of the progressive rock movement. Their sound identity is defined by Nansi Nevins' powerful, soul-inflected vocals and the band's ability to weave complex, jazz-influenced arrangements into folk-rock structures. Their career was tragically interrupted at its peak when Nevins was severely injured in a car accident shortly after Woodstock, an event that permanently altered her vocal capabilities and stalled the band's momentum. Critically, they are viewed as a 'lost' great band of the 60s, often compared to Jefferson Airplane but noted for a more diverse instrumental palette. Their influence can be seen in the later development of folk-prog and world-music-infused rock.
