Systema Solar

Systema Solar is a Colombian collective formed in 2006, emerging from the vibrant MDE07 contemporary art biennial in Medellin. They are the primary architects of the 'Berbenautika' movement, a multidisciplinary approach that blends music, video art, and the 'piko' (sound system) culture of the Colombian Caribbean.

Their sound identity is built on the 'recycling' of Afro-Caribbean styles like champeta, bullerengue, and cumbia, which they recontextualize through the lens of hip-hop, house, and breakbeat. Unlike many of their contemporaries who lean toward polished pop-fusion, Systema Solar maintains a gritty, sample-heavy edge that honors the improvisational nature of street parties. They occupy a critical cultural position as bridge-builders between marginalized coastal traditions and global electronic audiences. Critically, they are lauded for their ability to pair infectious party music with sharp social commentary regarding environmentalism and regional identity. Their influence is seen across the 'Electrocumbe' scene, providing a template for how traditional rhythms can be modernized without losing their communal, folkloric soul.
