Tanner

Tanner was a pivotal, if under-recognized, fixture of the 1990s San Diego post-hardcore explosion. Formed by Gar Wood, Chris Prescott, and Matt Ohlin following the dissolution of Fishwife, the trio refined the 'San Diego sound' characterized by angular guitar work and high-tension rhythms.

Their sound identity is built on a foundation of math-rock precision filtered through punk aggression, often drawing comparisons to scene leaders like Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes. Over their brief four-year tenure, they released two critically respected albums on Caroline Records and World Domination. Prescott's drumming is particularly noteworthy for its intricate, driving nature, a skill he later brought to No Knife and Pinback. Despite their short lifespan, Tanner is viewed by crate-diggers and genre historians as a 'musician's band,' representing the bridge between the chaotic energy of early 90s punk and the more structured, melodic experimentation of late 90s indie rock.
