Tarentel

Tarentel is a seminal San Francisco-based collective that played a pivotal role in the evolution of post-rock from melodic crescendos to abstract experimentalism. Formed in 1995 by Danny Grody and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, the group's early output, particularly the 1999 debut 'From Bone to Satellite', aligned them with the 'Constellation Records' school of post-rock, characterized by long-form compositions and cinematic emotional arcs.

However, the band's trajectory is defined by a restless rejection of genre tropes. By the mid-2000s, they moved toward a more improvisational, drone-heavy sound influenced by noise, psychedelia, and the avant-garde. A crucial element of their identity was the collaboration with filmmaker Paul Clipson, whose Super-8 projections were considered a fifth instrument, cementing the band's 'visual-sonic' aesthetic. Cantu-Ledesma's later work with the Root Strata label further reflects the band's legacy of exploring the intersection of melody and textural decay. Critically, they are respected as a bridge between the structured indie-rock of the 90s and the more fluid, ambient-leaning experimentalism of the 21st century.
