Team Ghost was founded in 2007 by Nicolas Fromageau, a pivotal figure in modern electronic music who co-founded M83 with Anthony Gonzalez. After departing M83 following 'Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts', Fromageau spent several years in hiatus before re-emerging with a sound that traded synth-pop nostalgia for a darker, more guitar-driven 'coldgaze' aesthetic.
The project is a collaboration with Christophe Guerin and Jean-Philippe Talaga, blending French touch sensibilities with the abrasive textures of post-punk and industrial music. Their work is characterized by dense layering, bit-crushed electronics, and a cinematic approach to song structure that often favors slow-burning builds over traditional pop formats. Critically, they are viewed as the darker, more experimental sibling to the M83 sound, influential within the niche intersection of electronic and shoegaze communities. Their discography, particularly the early EPs on Kiss Me First Records, is highly regarded by collectors of the 'noughties' French electronic scene for its unique ability to maintain emotional warmth despite its icy, digital-first production.
