Tek

Gritty, low-slung Brooklyn boom bap that feels like a midnight walk through Bed-Stuy. Heavy on dusty samples and street-level storytelling.

Intro

Tek (Tekomin Williams) is a foundational figure in the Brooklyn-based Boot Camp Clik collective, emerging in the early 1990s as one half of Smif-N-Wessun. His sound identity is inextricably linked to the 'Bucktown' aesthetic: a fusion of dark, jazz-influenced boom bap production and street-oriented lyricism.

Along with partner General Steele and the wider Duck Down Records roster, Tek helped define the mid-90s New York underground sound, characterized by filtered basslines and dusty, lo-fi sampling techniques. His career arc moved from the massive success of 'Dah Shinin' through legal battles with Smith & Wesson (leading to the Cocoa Brovaz era) and into a prolific solo career in the 2010s and 2020s. Critically, he is regarded as a master of the 'timber' and 'flow' school of rap, where the musicality of the delivery is as important as the content. He remains a key bridge between the hardcore rap of the 90s and the modern lo-fi hip-hop movement.
