The Angels are a foundational pillar of Australian hard rock, formed in Adelaide in 1974. Originally starting as a jug band before evolving into the Keystone Angels, they eventually simplified their name and sharpened their sound under the guidance of the legendary Alberts label.
Their sonic identity is defined by the 'Brewster-stroke' - a unique, rhythmic guitar technique involving tight, down-stroked chords that influenced global acts like Guns N' Roses and Pearl Jam. Led by the charismatic and theatrical Doc Neeson, the band dominated the Australian charts throughout the late 70s and 80s with a string of multi-platinum albums including 'Face to Face' and 'No Exit'. Despite multiple attempts to break the US market under the name Angel City, they remained a primarily Australian phenomenon, where they are regarded as one of the greatest live acts in the country's history. Their cultural legacy is cemented by the audience's infamous call-and-response chant during 'Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again', a piece of folklore that has transcended the song itself to become a national rite of passage.
