Polished Japanese new wave that feels like a rainy night in a high-end Tokyo hotel. Sophisticated synth-pop for the existentialist at heart.
The Beatniks sound like the intersection of European art-house cinema and Japanese technological precision. It is music that wears a well-tailored suit while contemplating the void. The sound is anchored by Yukihiro Takahashi's signature crisp, metronomic drumming and Keiichi Suzuki's eccentric, avant-pop sensibilities, resulting in a texture that is both cold and deeply human.
What makes them truly distinctive is their 'Exitentialist' aesthetic. They managed to take the cold, detached tropes of 1980s synth-pop and infuse them with a specific kind of Japanese melancholia and dry humor. Their use of English and French vocals adds a layer of cosmopolitan detachment, making the music feel like it belongs to no specific country, but rather to a global network of late-night thinkers.
Start with their debut album, Exitentialism. It perfectly captures the moody, rhythmic tension of their early years. If you prefer something more refined and modern, jump to Exitentialist A Xie Xie to hear how their chemistry evolved into a playful, elder-statesman version of art-rock.
The Beatniks are an alternative rock duo formed by Yellow Magic Orchestra drummer/singer Yukihiro Takahashi and Keiichi Suzuki. The duo's debut album featured vocals mostly in English, with the rest in French. In 2017, the band recorded the theme song for NHK TV's J-Melo, 'Softly Softly', in collaboration with Leo Imai. In 2018 the band released their first album in seven years, Exitentialist A Xie Xie. They then undertook live performances, despite Takahashi recently having had surgery on his eyes.
