The Black Heart Procession

The Black Heart Procession emerged from the San Diego indie scene in the late 1990s as a side project of Three Mile Pilot members Pall Jenkins and Tobias Nathaniel. While Three Mile Pilot explored more jagged, math-rock influenced territories, Black Heart Procession leaned into a gothic, noir-inflected sound that became their signature.

Their early trilogy of albums, simply titled 1, 2, and 3, established a sonic world defined by slow tempos, minor-key piano, and the prominent use of the singing saw. This aesthetic positioned them alongside contemporaries like Tindersticks and Dirty Three, though with a distinctly American, almost Western-gothic edge. Over time, their sound evolved to include more diverse instrumentation and conceptual themes, most notably on 'Amore del Tropico', which introduced Latin influences and a murder-mystery narrative. Critically, they are regarded as masters of atmosphere, often cited as a bridge between the slowcore movement and the more theatrical elements of dark indie rock. Their influence can be heard in the more cinematic corners of modern indie, where texture and mood are given precedence over traditional pop structures.
