Hazy, melodic Manchester indie that captures the transition from baggy grooves to guitar-driven pop. Perfect for rainy afternoons and nostalgic city walks.
The Clouds occupy that sweet, murky spot in the early 90s Manchester scene where the danceable 'baggy' rhythms of the late 80s began to dissolve into more traditional, wistful indie pop. Their sound is defined by a certain unpolished charm, featuring jangly guitars that feel slightly dampened by the North West rain and keyboards that add a layer of psychedelic color without ever becoming overbearing. It is music that feels lived-in and authentic, lacking the stadium-sized ego of the Britpop era that would soon follow.
What makes them distinctive is the interplay between their three-Simon guitar and vocal core and the prominent use of percussion and keys. This creates a texture that is denser than typical C86-style indie pop but more fragile than the heavy hitters of the Madchester movement. There is a persistent sense of melody buried under a layer of analog tape hiss and reverb, giving the tracks a ghostly, broadcast-from-the-past quality that rewards attentive listening.
To get a sense of their world, start with their 1991 recordings. These tracks capture the band at their most vital, fresh from a John Peel session and touring with contemporaries like World of Twist. It is the sound of a specific moment in British music history: a transition point where the party was winding down and a more contemplative, guitar-focused era was just beginning to take shape.
The Clouds were an indie rock band signed to Chris and Julia Nagle's 'Wobble Records'. They are from Manchester. They recorded a John Peel session in 1991 and appeared live on Mark Radcliffe's 'Hit the North' BBC Radio 5 show in the same year. The band received some regional and national radio airplay and appeared live as a support act with Sheffield band World of Twist (1991), Intastella (1991) and indie pop and alternative dance band Flowered Up (1991) as well as in their own right at venues in the North West. For the duration of the time they were signed to Wobble Records, the band were made up of: Simon Dickinson (Lead Vocal / Guitar) Simon Maguire (Guitar) Timothy Jones (Bass Guitar) Dave Drennan (Keyboards) Simon Moss (Percussion) Three Simons in that band!
