The Coathangers

Snarling garage punk with a wicked sense of humor and jagged hooks. Raw, irreverent, and built for basement shows where the floor is always sticky.

Intro

The Coathangers sound like the best kind of trouble. Their music is a serrated blend of garage rock grit and post-punk angularity, characterized by a 'do-it-yourself' spirit that values raw energy over technical perfection. It is music that feels immediate and physical, often punctuated by unexpected sounds like squeaky toys or frantic keyboard stabs that keep the listener off-balance.

What truly sets them apart is their vocal dynamic. With multiple members trading off lead duties and harmonizing in a way that feels more like a gang shout than a choir, they create a sense of collective defiance. Their lyrics balance biting social commentary with a playful, almost bratty irreverence, proving that you can be deeply serious about your politics while still having a blast on stage.

Start with 'Larceny & Old Lace' to hear them at their most cohesive, or dive into 'The Coathangers' self-titled debut for the purest distillation of their chaotic, high-energy origins. It is the perfect soundtrack for anyone who prefers their rock and roll with a little dirt under its fingernails.

The Coathangers are an American all-female punk rock/garage band from Atlanta, Georgia featuring singer/guitarist Julia Kugel-Montoya (Crook Kid Coathanger), bassist Meredith Franco (Minnie Coathanger) and singer/drummer Stephanie Luke (Rusty Coathanger). Formed in 2006, the band chose the name "Coathangers" which refers to a dangerous method of self-induced abortion; all of the band's members are pro-choice. Long-time keyboardist Candice Jones (Bebe Coathanger), left the band amicably in 2013. The band was asked to open for the Hiss on the strength of their performance playing a house show. Since then they have headlined shows in the United States and abroad. In addition, several times they have appeared as the support act for fellow Atlanta band Black Lips's New York City concerts.
