The Datsuns

The Datsuns emerged from Cambridge, New Zealand, as a pivotal force in the early 2000s garage rock revival, alongside contemporaries like The White Stripes and The Hives. Formed originally as Trinket in 1995, the quartet - consisting of Dolf de Borst, Christian Livingstone, Phil Somervell, and Matt Osment (later Ben Cole) - rebranded in 2000.

Their sound identity is a high-velocity blend of Deep Purple-esque hard rock riffs and the raw, stripped-back aesthetic of garage punk. This 'heavy-garage' hybrid earned them significant critical acclaim in the UK press, leading to a high-profile signing with V2 Records. Their 2002 self-titled debut remains a landmark of the era, peaking at number one in NZ and breaking the UK Top 20. Culturally, they represent the antipodean 'scuzz-rock' export, bridging the gap between classic rock revivalism and modern indie energy. Their influence is notable, with bands like Arctic Monkeys citing them as an early inspiration. Despite the waning of the garage rock trend, the band has maintained a consistent career, evolving their sound to include stoner rock and psychedelic elements on later albums like 'Death Rattle Boogie' and 'Eye to Eye'.
