The Ecstasy of Saint Theresa (EOST) is a seminal Czech alternative band that bridged the gap between Eastern European indie and Western shoegaze/electronic movements. Formed in 1990, they were led by Jan P.
Muchow, who became a defining figure in Czech music production. Their early period (1991-1993) was characterized by a dense, psychedelic rock sound influenced by My Bloody Valentine and Cocteau Twins, culminating in the 'Fluidtrance Centauri' EP. This era saw them gain rare international traction for a Czech band, including a John Peel session and a deal with Go! Discs. Following a mid-90s hiatus and lineup changes, the band reinvented themselves as an electronic duo featuring Muchow and actress/vocalist Kateřina Winterová. This second phase, highlighted by the album 'In Dust 3', moved toward a sophisticated blend of trip-hop, ambient, and post-rock. Muchow's parallel career as a film composer (notably for 'Loners') deeply informed the band's cinematic, atmospheric sound. They remain a 'cult classic' entity in the Czech Republic, representing the peak of the country's 1990s alternative boom.
