Formed in Rotterdam in 1984, The Essence is one of the most significant Dutch exports within the gothic rock and darkwave scenes. Led by Hans Diener, the band achieved international cult status, particularly in Spain and Germany, by refining a sound heavily influenced by the 'Seventeen Seconds' and 'Faith' eras of The Cure.
Their debut 'Purity' established their atmospheric credentials, but it was 1987's 'A Monument of Trust' and the hit single 'A Mirage' that cemented their place in the European new wave canon. Critically, they are often noted for their high production standards compared to the lo-fi grit of many post-punk peers, utilizing professional studio polish to enhance their 'dreamy' aesthetic. Throughout the late 80s and early 90s, they evolved toward a more conceptual and darker sound, culminating in 'Nothing Lasts Forever'.
