The Films were a Charleston-based indie rock quartet that emerged during the mid-2000s guitar band boom. Led by Michael Trent, who would later find significant acclaim in the Americana duo Shovels & Rope, the band specialized in a high-octane blend of garage rock and power pop.
Their debut, 'Don't Dance Rattlesnake', was recorded at The Loft in Michigan and showcased a sound heavily influenced by 60s British Invasion melodies filtered through a gritty, modern American lens. While they struggled to find a massive domestic audience in the US, they achieved significant cult status in Germany and Japan, often touring those territories extensively. Their second album, 'Oh, Scorpio', saw them experimenting with more diverse arrangements before the band dissolved in 2010 due to financial strain and creative exhaustion. Critically, they are remembered as a 'musician's band,' noted for their tight live performances and Trent's distinctive, raspy vocal delivery which foreshadowed his later success in the folk-rock world.
