Shimmering guitar textures and breathy harmonies that bridge the gap between jangle pop and shoegaze. Hazy, melodic, and perfectly restless late-night indie rock.
The Heart Throbs were a pivotal but often overlooked component of the UK's late-80s and early-90s alternative explosion. Formed in Reading in 1986, the band was led by sisters Rose Carlotti and Rachel DeFreitas, who brought a unique familial vocal chemistry to the project.
Their pedigree was deeply rooted in the post-punk elite; they were the sisters of Pete DeFreitas (Echo & The Bunnymen) and Frank DeFreitas (The Woodentops). This background informed a sound that was more structurally rigorous than many of their shoegaze contemporaries. Signing to the influential One Little Indian label, they released three albums that tracked the evolution of British indie from jangle-pop to a more polished, alternative rock sound. Their debut, 'Cleopatra Grip' (1990), remains a high-water mark for the era's dream-pop movement, characterized by its shimmering production and Carlotti's distinctively airy vocal presence. Despite critical acclaim and a cult following, the band struggled to find mainstream footing and disbanded in 1993 after the release of 'Vertical Smile'. They are now regarded as a bridge between the C86 movement and the more aggressive textures of early 90s alternative rock.
