The High Strung

Caffeinated indie rock with surrealist lyrics and a relentless, road-ready pulse. It is power pop for people who prefer library books to bar fights.

Intro

The High Strung sound like a band that has spent more time in a tour bus than a house, and it shows in their telepathic musical chemistry. Their music is a bright, jittery blend of power pop and indie rock that feels both lived-in and wildly imaginative. There is a distinct lack of blues influence here; instead, the melodies lean into a British Invasion-style crispness filtered through the grit of the Detroit garage scene. It is music that feels constantly in motion, driven by a rhythm section that never quite sits still.

What truly sets them apart is the lyrical world-building of Josh Malerman. Rather than typical rock tropes, the songs often feel like eerie, whimsical short stories or pages from a forgotten children's book. You might hear about museum curators, strange inventions, or surreal characters, all delivered with a nasal, earnest vocal style that cuts through the guitar jangle. It is an autonomous sound that refuses to fit into a specific scene, favoring a DIY spirit and a massive, ever-growing catalog of songs.

Start with 'Get the Guests' to hear the band at their most cohesive and catchy. It perfectly captures their ability to turn quirky, narrative-driven ideas into anthemic indie rock. From there, dive into 'Moxie Bravo' for a rawer look at their early energy. It is the ideal soundtrack for anyone who loves the prolific, eccentric output of bands like Guided By Voices but wants a tighter, more melodic punch.

The High Strung is an American rock band from Detroit, Michigan, United States. The band is composed of lead singers and guitarists Josh Malerman and Mark Owen, guitarist Stephen Palmer, bassist Chad Stocker, and drummer Derek Berk. Malerman, Berk, and Owen attended Michigan State University in the late 1990s before moving to New York City. The band formed in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, when the members of the former East Lansing, Michigan, band The Masons changed their name and added Stocker to the roster. Owen left the band in 2005 and returned in 2016. Palmer joined the group shortly after the recording of Dragon Dicks in early 2010. These are Good Times, Moxie Bravo, Get the Guests, ¿Posible o' Imposible? and Quiet Riots were produced in Detroit by producer/engineer Jim Diamond.
