The Hospitals

The Hospitals, primarily the vehicle for Adam Stonehouse, represent a pivotal bridge between the 1990s noise rock of labels like Amphetamine Reptile and the 2000s 'shit-gaze' and lo-fi movements. Emerging from Portland before relocating to San Francisco, the band's sound identity is defined by extreme sonic degradation and a violent approach to the guitar-and-drums duo format.

Their earlier work, such as the self-titled 2003 LP, showcased a frantic garage-punk energy influenced by Flipper and The Scientists. However, their 2008 masterpiece 'Hairdryer Peace' signaled a shift toward a more abstract, sample-heavy, and collage-based noise aesthetic, utilizing heavy tape saturation and non-linear song structures. This evolution placed them at the center of a fertile underground scene alongside acts like Sightings and Pink & Brown. Critically, they are regarded as one of the most uncompromising bands of their era, influential for their 'ugly' production choices that challenged the indie rock polish of the mid-2000s.
