The Intelligence is the primary creative vehicle for Lars Finberg, a central figure in the Pacific Northwest's fertile art-punk and garage scenes. Formed in 1999, the project emerged from the same orbit as A-Frames, sharing a fascination with cold, mechanical textures and lo-fi recording aesthetics.
Over more than two decades, Finberg has evolved the sound from primitive home-recorded experiments into a more sophisticated, though no less gritty, brand of post-punk. The band's discography, largely released on influential labels like In the Red and S-S Records, serves as a bridge between the 70s art-punk of The Fall and the modern garage revival led by Thee Oh Sees. Critically, they are regarded as 'musician's musicians,' prized for their ability to maintain a consistent aesthetic of 'boredom and terror' while constantly shifting their lineup and sonic palette. Their influence is felt in the way they popularized the use of drum machines within the traditionally purist garage rock scene, paving the way for a more experimental, synth-integrated approach to punk.
