The Jesus and Mary Chain

Sweet 60s pop melodies buried under a thick layer of abrasive guitar feedback. The ultimate soundtrack for looking cool in a dark room.

Intro

The Jesus and Mary Chain, led by brothers Jim and William Reid, are the architects of noise pop and a foundational influence on the shoegaze movement. Emerging from East Kilbride, Scotland, in the early 1980s, they revolutionized the alternative landscape by fusing 1960s bubblegum pop structures with extreme, avant-garde guitar feedback.

Their 1985 debut, Psychocandy, remains a watershed moment in music history, challenging the polished production of the era with a confrontational, distorted aesthetic. The band's early career was marked by notoriety, including 15-minute sets that ended in equipment destruction and audience riots, orchestrated in part by Creation Records founder Alan McGee. As they evolved, albums like Darklands saw them pivot toward a cleaner, more somber sound, while Automatic introduced drum machines and a more rhythmic, synth-influenced rock. Critically, they are viewed as the missing link between the Velvet Underground's art-rock and the 90s alternative explosion, influencing everyone from My Bloody Valentine to Nine Inch Nails. Their cultural position is that of the ultimate outsiders who successfully infiltrated the UK charts while maintaining a strictly aloof, counter-cultural persona.
