High-energy desert new wave with shimmering synths and power-pop grit. The missing link between 80s radio rock and iconic video game melodies.
The Jetzons occupy a unique space where the neon-soaked aesthetics of 1980s new wave meet the muscular songwriting of power pop. Their sound is defined by a propulsive energy, characterized by driving basslines and a sophisticated use of synthesizers that feel both futuristic and warmly analog. It is music that captures the specific friction of a desert city at night: hot, restless, and full of electric potential.
What truly sets them apart is the melodic precision of Brad Buxer's keyboard work, which famously served as a blueprint for some of the most iconic video game music of the 16-bit era. While they have the quirky edge of Oingo Boingo, they ground it in a radio-ready sensibility that feels like a lost bridge between The Cars and the alternative rock that would later emerge from the Arizona scene. It is cerebral but danceable, polished but possessing a distinct live-wire intensity.
Start with the 'Hard Times' collection to hear the band at their peak. It showcases their ability to craft hooks that are instantly familiar yet technically complex. It is the perfect soundtrack for anyone who loves the 80s aesthetic but wants something with more grit and instrumental pedigree than standard synth-pop.
The Jetzons were an American new wave band from Tempe, Arizona. The band comprised guitarist Bruce Connole, keyboardist Brad Buxer, bassist Damon Doiron and drummer Steve Golladay. After the band separated, Buxer became the musical director for Michael Jackson. An unreleased Jetzons song, "Hard Times", was rewritten for the 1994 video game Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
