Ethereal lap steel guitar and breathy vocals create a liquid, slow-motion take on Americana. Perfect for quiet nights and deep reflection.
The Last Town Chorus sounds like a lonely lighthouse beacon cutting through a thick Atlantic fog. At the center of the sound is Megan Hickey's lap steel guitar, which she plays not with country twang, but with a shimmering, ambient sustain that feels more like a synthesizer or a cello. It is music that exists in the spaces between notes, favoring long decays and a sense of vast, open air.
What makes this project truly distinctive is the juxtaposition of that high-lonesome instrumental ache with Hickey's intimate, almost whispered vocal delivery. While many Americana acts lean into grit and dirt, this is clean, polished, and profoundly atmospheric. It takes the bones of traditional songwriting and stretches them out until they become something ghostly and cinematic.
Start with the album Wire Waltz. It perfectly captures the band's ability to turn a frantic pop song like David Bowie's Modern Love into a heartbreaking, glacial meditation. It is the definitive entry point for understanding how they use texture to redefine the boundaries of folk and pop.
