The Orb

The Orb, led by the singular vision of Alex Paterson, is the primary architect of the ambient house genre. Formed in 1988, the project emerged from the London club scene's 'chill-out' rooms, specifically Paterson's residency at Heaven.

Their sound identity is built on a foundation of 1970s kosmische musik (Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream), Brian Eno's ambient theories, and the heavy low-end of Jamaican dub (King Tubby). The group's early work with Jimmy Cauty (of The KLF) established a template for 'long-form' electronic singles that challenged radio formats, most notably the 22-minute 'A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules From the Centre of the Ultraworld.' Throughout the 1990s, the group evolved from club-adjacent textures to more complex, experimental soundscapes on albums like 'Orbus Terrarum.' Despite a rotating cast of high-profile collaborators including Thomas Fehlmann, Youth, and even Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, Paterson has maintained a consistent aesthetic of 'sci-fi surrealism.' Critically, they are regarded as the link between the prog-rock era and modern electronic music, proving that dance music could be cerebral, narrative, and deeply psychedelic without needing a 4/4 beat.
