The Plastics

The Plastics are a seminal South African indie rock outfit formed in Cape Town in 2008. Originally evolving from a punk project called HOAX, the band - led by the Righini brothers - pivoted toward a more eclectic and 'retro-blend' aesthetic.

Their sound identity is a sophisticated mix of new wave, disco-punk, and psychedelic rock, often compared to the art-rock sensibilities of the late 70s but grounded in 21st-century production. They gained significant traction through a DIY ethos, famously distributing thousands of free EPs in their early years, which helped cement their status in the South African alternative scene. Critically, they are lauded for their technical proficiency - bolstered by classically trained members - and their ability to integrate complex, bluesy guitar work with danceable rhythms. Over their career, they have transitioned from the raw energy of 'Shark' to the polished, atmospheric textures of 'In Threes' and 'EVE'.
