THE PREDATORS are a Japanese rock supergroup that serves as a creative outlet for members of the country's most influential bands: the pillows, GLAY, and Straightener (later Ellegarden). Formed in 2005, the project was initially a way for Sawao Yamanaka, JIRO, and Shinpei Nakayama to explore their shared love for Nirvana-esque grunge and punk rock, a departure from the more polished or experimental sounds of their main projects.
The band's name and original label (Three Mountain) were a play on the fact that all three founding members had the character for 'mountain' (yama) in their surnames. Their sound is characterized by post-grunge dynamics, heavy use of distortion, and a 'live-in-the-room' production aesthetic. Despite sporadic activity due to the members' primary commitments, they have maintained a consistent cult following and critical respect for their refusal to compromise on their raw, alternative rock roots.
