The Royal We

The Royal We is a name shared by several entities, but the most culturally significant is the Glasgow-based indie pop group active in the mid-2000s. Their sound identity is rooted in the 'Glasgow School' of indie, characterized by a mix of 60s pop sensibilities, post-punk angularity, and a distinct lyrical wit.

They were notable for incorporating swing-like rhythms into a standard rock format, creating a sound that was both retro and contemporary. The band's career was brief, culminating in a final performance on the same day their debut album was released in 2007. This 'flash-in-the-pan' existence contributed to their cult status. Following their dissolution, members Roxanne Clifford, James Hoare, and Patrick Doyle went on to form Sexy Kids and later the critically acclaimed Veronica Falls, cementing their influence on the subsequent decade of indie pop. A separate German project led by Dylan Kennedy also used the name, leaning more toward alternative rock and collaborating with members of Blackmail, leading to significant regional confusion in the European market during the mid-2000s.
