The Seeds are a foundational pillar of American garage rock and a primary architect of the proto-punk sound. Formed in Los Angeles in 1965, the band was led by the charismatic Sky Saxon, whose vocal style - a rhythmic, snarling delivery - became a template for future punk frontmen.

A defining characteristic of their sound was the absence of a traditional bassist in live settings; keyboardist Daryl Hooper performed bass lines on a separate keyboard, a technique later popularized by The Doors. Their 1966 hit 'Pushin' Too Hard' remains a definitive garage rock anthem, characterized by its repetitive structure and aggressive simplicity. While their early work focused on raw, high-energy rock, their 1967 album 'Future' saw them embrace the burgeoning psychedelic movement with more ornate arrangements. Despite these shifts, they maintained a core aesthetic of 'flower punk' - a term coined to describe their blend of hippie-era imagery with gritty, street-level rock. Their influence is vast, cited by artists ranging from The Ramones to Iggy Pop, and they remain a critical touchstone for the 'Nuggets' era of rock history.
