Intro

The String Cheese Incident sounds like a high-altitude celebration where traditional mountain music meets the neon glow of a late-night dance tent. It is a sound defined by the bright, percussive snap of acoustic instruments, like mandolins and banjos, which suddenly dissolve into swirling synthesizer washes and deep, funky bass grooves. The music feels expansive and unhurried, yet it possesses a relentless rhythmic drive that keeps the energy vibrating at a high frequency.

What makes them truly distinctive is their 'incident' philosophy, where a single song can travel from a traditional bluegrass breakdown into a space-rock odyssey and then into a Latin-infused percussion jam without ever losing its internal logic. They bridge the gap between the organic warmth of the Grateful Dead and the technological curiosity of modern electronic music. The interplay between Bill Nershi's grounded acoustic guitar and Michael Kang's soaring electric mandolin creates a unique sonic tension that is both earthy and extraterrestrial.

Start with 'Round the Wheel' to hear their ability to craft catchy, nature-inspired songwriting that still leaves plenty of room for instrumental exploration. For those who want the full experience, their live recordings from Hornings Hideout capture the band in their natural element, where the improvisation is most daring and the communal energy is palpable.

The String Cheese Incident (SCI) is an American jam band from Crested Butte and Telluride, Colorado, formed in 1993. The band is composed of Michael Kang (acoustic/electric mandolin, electric guitar, and violin), Michael Travis (drums and percussion), Bill Nershi (acoustic guitar, lap steel guitar, and electric slide guitar), Kyle Hollingsworth (piano, organ, Rhodes, and accordion), and Keith Moseley (bass guitar), and, since 2004, Jason Hann (auxiliary percussion). Their music has elements of bluegrass sounds, as well as rock, electronica, calypso, country, funk, jazz, Latin, progressive rock, reggae, and psychedelia. All members write original compositions and sing.
