The Surfaris

Dripping with spring reverb and frantic drum rolls. High-energy surf rock that captures the spray of the ocean and the heat of a California summer afternoon.

Intro

The Surfaris represent the quintessential sound of 1960s California surf culture. Their music is defined by a 'wet' sonic profile, where electric guitars are drenched in spring reverb to mimic the shimmering, fluid nature of the Pacific. It is high-octane, rhythm-forward rock and roll that prioritizes momentum and physical movement over complex melody.

What truly sets them apart is the sheer athleticism of the percussion. While many of their peers focused on melodic guitar hooks, The Surfaris elevated the drum kit to a lead instrument. The iconic rolls and syncopated breaks provide a sense of danger and excitement, mirroring the adrenaline of catching a wave or the chaotic energy of a teenage beach party.

Start with the essential 'Wipe Out' to hear the definitive surf drum solo, then move into 'Point Panic' for a masterclass in surf guitar tension. For a deeper dive into their evolution, 'The Surfaris Hurley Sessions' shows the band maintaining their signature bite decades after their initial explosion.

The Surfaris are an American surf music band formed in Glendora, California, in 1962. They are best known for two songs that hit the charts in the Los Angeles area, and nationally by May 1963: "Surfer Joe" and "Wipe Out", which were the A-side and B-side of the same 45 rpm single. The Surfaris were inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2019 for their hit instrumental song, "Wipe Out".
