Gritty, garage-recorded street punk with a strange obsession with medieval history. Lo-fi analog warmth meets anthemic, brick-wall defiance.
The Templars sound like a band that found a box of old glam rock records and a history textbook in a dusty Long Island garage and decided to reinvent street punk. Their sound is defined by a commitment to lo-fi production that feels intentional rather than accidental, wrapping their anthemic melodies in a layer of analog hiss and mid-range crunch. It is music that feels lived-in, rough around the edges, and fiercely independent.
What truly sets them apart is their singular lyrical focus. While their peers were singing about the pub or the picket line, The Templars were diving deep into the history of the Knights Templar and the Middle Ages. This intellectual curiosity, paired with a musical foundation that pulls as much from 70s rock and roll as it does from classic Oi!, creates a unique tension. They manage to be both sophisticated in their themes and primitive in their execution.
Start with 'Clockwork Orange Horror Show' to hear them at their most iconic. It captures that specific Acre Studios magic where the drums sound like they are in the room with you and the guitars have a melodic, almost melancholic bite that sticks in your head long after the record stops spinning.
The Templars are an Oi! band formed in Long Island, New York in April 1991. The band's musical influences include Oi!, punk rock, glam rock and rock and roll. They have tended to purposely use low-quality recording techniques (their Acre Studios is a garage). The band recognizes Perry Hardy as their full-time bassist and Chris White as full-time guitarist, even though they do not play on the albums (with the exception of Hardy on two albums). The band currently uses a lineup of four musicians for concerts, with a second guitar player, but still usually records as only a two-piece (with Carl Fritscher playing all bass and guitar parts, as well as vocals with Phil Rigaud on drums). The band's name comes from an ancient order of Christian militants called the Knights Templar. Their focus on Middle Ages history is largely informed by Carl Fritscher (singer/guitarist) and Phil Rigaud's (drummer) studies and interests. A Templars album cover was displayed in a History Channel documentary about the Knights Templar. The narrator states that the legacy of the medieval organization has influenced varied aspects of modern society, including as film, literature and "hardcore punk music."
