The Whip (US) was a short-lived but highly influential punk supergroup based in the Pacific Northwest during the early 2000s. Comprising Joe Preston (Melvins, Thrones, High on Fire) and Jared Warren (KARP, Big Business), the band represented a bridge between the region's storied hardcore history and the emerging sludge/stoner rock scenes.
Their sound was characterized by an extremely heavy, bass-driven approach to punk rock, utilizing massive distortion and a high-volume aesthetic that mirrored the members' other projects. The band's career was tragically halted following the death of drummer Scott Jernigan in 2003. Despite a limited discography consisting primarily of a 7-inch and a handful of live recordings, they remain a cult favorite among crate diggers and fans of the 'Wantage USA' label sound. Critically, they are viewed as a missing link in the evolution of heavy music in the Northwest, blending the technical precision of math-rock with the raw aggression of sludge.
