The Youngsters

The Youngsters, primarily the duo of Gilles Escoffier (Gil le Gamin) and Olivier Mateu (later known as Rodriguez Jr.) , were pivotal figures in the second wave of French electronic music.

Emerging from the Montpellier scene in the late 1990s, they became a cornerstone of Laurent Garnier's F Communications label. Their sound identity is a sophisticated blend of Detroit techno's soulfulness and the rigorous sound design of European experimentalism. Mateu's background in classical piano and interest in avant-garde composers like Stockhausen provided a melodic and structural depth that elevated their work above standard club fare. Their career reached a critical zenith in the early 2000s with 'Illogique', an album that defined the 'tech-house' transition by merging driving rhythms with lush, atmospheric synth work. They are highly regarded for their live performances, which emphasized hardware manipulation over laptop sets. Their influence persists in the melodic techno and deep tech genres, bridging the gap between the raw energy of 90s rave and the polished production of modern electronic music.
