Intro

Their / They're / There is a seminal 'supergroup' within the fourth-wave Midwest emo and math rock revival. Formed in 2011, the band comprises Evan Weiss (Into It.

Over It.) , Matthew Frank (Loose Lips Sink Ships), and Mike Kinsella (American Football, Owen). Their sound identity is built on the intersection of Frank's highly technical, tapping-heavy guitar style and Kinsella's distinctive, jazz-inflected drumming, which provides a more aggressive and busy rhythmic foundation than his work in American Football. Weiss provides the melodic glue with his characteristic nasal, earnest vocal delivery and driving bass lines. Historically, the band served as a bridge between the technical 'twinkle' emo of the 2010s and the more structured indie rock of the Chicago scene. After a significant hiatus following their 2013 EPs, their 2022 return solidified their status as elder statesmen of the genre, maintaining a high-fidelity, clean production style that emphasizes instrumental clarity over lo-fi aesthetics.
