Thunder emerged in 1989 from the ashes of Terraplane, a transition that saw the band pivot from pop-inflected blues to a robust, arena-ready hard rock sound. Led by the songwriting of guitarist Luke Morley and the powerhouse vocals of Danny Bowes, they represent the 'Second Wave' of British hard rock.
Their 1990 debut, 'Backstreet Symphony', produced by Andy Taylor of Duran Duran, remains a touchstone of the era, blending the swagger of the 70s with 90s production values. Despite the rise of grunge, Thunder maintained a fiercely loyal European and Japanese following, characterized by a 'retro-modern' aesthetic that prioritized musicianship and soulful delivery. Their career arc is marked by several hiatuses and triumphant returns, most notably their post-2014 resurgence which saw them achieving higher UK chart positions than during their initial heyday. Critically, they are lauded for their consistency and Bowes' status as one of the finest rock vocalists of his generation, often compared to Paul Rodgers.
