Intro

Timbalada is the sound of a hundred drums speaking at once. It is a percussive hurricane that originated in the Candeal neighborhood of Salvador, defined by the sharp, metallic snap of the timbal drum and the deep, earth-shaking rumble of the surdo. The music feels like a physical force, a collective heartbeat that is impossible to ignore. It carries the heat of a Brazilian summer and the unbridled joy of a street carnival.

What makes them truly distinctive is their communal power. Unlike standard pop acts, Timbalada is a movement. The vocals often take the form of anthemic chants and call-and-response patterns that invite the listener to join the tribe. There is a raw, organic density to their recordings that captures the chaos and precision of a massive drum corps, blending traditional African-influenced rhythms with the pop sensibilities of axé.

Start with their self-titled 1993 debut or 'Mineral' to hear the group at their creative peak. These albums showcase the 'timbal' revolution led by Carlinhos Brown, where the percussion isn't just the backing track; it is the lead instrument, the melody, and the message all at once.

Timbalada is an Afro-Brazilian musician group from Candeal, Salvador, Brazil. It was founded by drummer Carlinhos Brown, and the composer and percussionist Tony Mola. The musical style is between samba reggae and axé, with strong influences from African music. They are a highly popular group which regularly performs sold-out concerts throughout Brazil.
