Tosca

Tosca is the definitive downtempo project of Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber, formed in Vienna in 1994. Emerging from the same creative wellspring as the legendary Kruder & Dorfmeister, Tosca refined the 'Viennese Sound' - a blend of trip-hop, dub, and lounge music characterized by high production values and a laid-back, 'gemütlich' aesthetic.

Their debut, Opera (1997), established their signature use of vocal fragments and spacious arrangements, but it was 1999's Suzuki that cemented their status as masters of the genre. The project is notable for its longevity and consistency, evolving from the sample-heavy textures of the late 90s into the more minimalist, ambient-leaning soundscapes of No Hassle (2009). Huber's background in experimental composition provides a structural rigor that elevates the music above standard 'chillout' fare. Critically, they are viewed as architects of the lounge revival, influencing a generation of electronic producers with their meticulous attention to sonic warmth and rhythmic restraint. Their work remains a staple of high-end lifestyle spaces and late-night listening sessions globally.
