Turin Brakes emerged at the turn of the millennium as a cornerstone of the UK's New Acoustic Movement, alongside peers like Elbow and Kings of Convenience. Formed by childhood friends Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian, their sound is built on a foundation of sophisticated folk-rock songwriting characterized by intricate fingerpicking and dual-vocal harmonies.
Their 2001 debut, The Optimist LP, earned a Mercury Prize nomination and established their identity as masters of the 'quiet is the new loud' aesthetic. Throughout the 2000s, they evolved their sound, moving from the starker folk of their debut to the more expansive, darker textures of Ether Song (produced by Tony Hoffer) and the funk-inflected JackInABox. Despite a lack of sustained chart dominance after the success of the single 'Painkiller (Summer Rain)', they maintained a dedicated cult following and critical respect for their consistent craftsmanship. Their influence can be heard in the wave of indie-folk that followed in the late 2000s, bridging the gap between traditional 70s singer-songwriters and modern indie-pop production.
