Ugly Kid Joe emerged from the Isla Vista scene in 1989, positioning themselves as a satirical antithesis to the fading glam metal movement. Their sound is a hybrid of hard rock, funk metal, and alternative metal, heavily influenced by the rhythmic drive of Red Hot Chili Peppers and the heavy riffing of Black Sabbath and AC/DC.
They achieved significant commercial success in the early 1990s, notably becoming the first band to have an EP certified platinum with 'As Ugly as They Wanna Be'. Their cultural footprint is defined by two major hits: the bratty anthem 'Everything About You' and a heavy cover of 'Cat's in the Cradle', which showcased their ability to handle balladry with a hard-rock edge. After a hiatus starting in 1997, the band reunited in 2010, maintaining a consistent presence in the European festival circuit and continuing to release records that preserve their signature mix of humor and heavy grooves. Critically, they are often viewed as a bridge between the party-rock of the 80s and the cynical alternative explosion of the 90s.
