Underoath is a pivotal American post-hardcore band that redefined the boundaries of heavy music in the 2000s. Originally formed in 1997 as a Christian deathcore/black metal outfit under vocalist Dallas Taylor, the band underwent a seismic shift with the arrival of Spencer Chamberlain for 2004's 'They're Only Chasing Safety.'
This era introduced a more melodic, 'screamo' influenced sound that achieved massive commercial success. However, it was 2006's 'Define the Great Line' that cemented their legacy, incorporating technical guitar work inspired by Botch and atmospheric elements reminiscent of Isis and Radiohead. Their sound identity is defined by the interplay between Chamberlain's versatile screams and drummer Aaron Gillespie's melodic vocals, backed by Christopher Dudley's experimental electronics. Despite their roots in the Christian music scene, the band eventually distanced themselves from religious labels, seeking broader artistic freedom. Critically, they are regarded as the bridge between underground hardcore and mainstream alternative metal, influencing countless bands in the metalcore and emo-rap spheres.
