Intro

Chaif represents the soulful, unpretentious heart of the Sverdlovsk rock scene. Their music is built on the foundation of acoustic guitars, bluesy harmonica riffs, and a rhythmic sensibility that unexpectedly leans into reggae and country. It is the sound of a band that values sincerity over polish, creating an atmosphere that feels less like a concert and more like a gathering of lifelong companions in a dimly lit kitchen or around a forest bonfire.

What truly distinguishes Chaif is their 'Orange Mood' philosophy: a specific brand of optimistic melancholy. While their peers in the Russian rock pantheon often leaned into dark existentialism or heavy social critique, Vladimir Shakhrin and Vladimir Begunov focused on the small, human moments. Their songs capture the beauty in everyday struggle, the value of male friendship, and the bittersweet passage of time, all delivered with a raspy, conversational vocal style that invites the listener to join in.

For those new to the band, the 'Orange Mood' (Oranzhevoye Nastroyeniye) series is the essential entry point. These albums strip away the studio sheen to reveal the band's core: two guitars, a harmonica, and songs that have become part of the collective DNA of post-Soviet culture. It is music for when you need to feel grounded, connected, and perhaps a little nostalgic for a time you never actually lived through.

Chaif (Чайф) is a Russian rock band formed in 1984 in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg), Russia, by Vladimir Shakhrin and Vladimir Begunov. Their name is derived from the word chai, meaning tea, and kaif (slang word), meaning pleasure. The band became known in 1992 with songs such as Ne Speshi (Don't Hurry) and 17. By 1997, the popularity of rock music had declined and they were playing smaller venue. They have released several albums. Their musical styles range from rock and roll to Blues and some songs which feature a strong reggae influence. The band in 2008 was still touring and releasing albums occasionally. After the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation, Chaif took part in cultural meeting between delegations from Crimea and Sverdlovsk Oblast. The lead singer of the band, Vladimir Shakhrin, was critical of Andrey Makarevich for supporting Ukraine's position in the conflict. In 2022, the band released a statement blaming both sides for the Russian invasion of Ukraine while providing material support to Russian troops in Ukraine and expressing distaste towards musicians that had left Russia following the start of the conflict.
