Shimmering 80s pop with a sophisticated edge. Delicate vocals meet Ryuichi Sakamoto's synth textures for a sound that is both nostalgic and avant-garde.
Mari Iijima's music exists in the shimmering intersection of 1980s idol pop and sophisticated art-school experimentation. Her early work, famously produced by Ryuichi Sakamoto, carries a crystalline quality where every synth chime and piano chord feels intentional and bright. It is music that captures the specific neon-lit melancholy of Tokyo at dusk, blending the accessibility of a pop star with the technical depth of a classically trained pianist.
What sets her apart is the tension between her delicate, breathy vocal delivery and the complex, often avant-garde arrangements surrounding her. While many of her contemporaries leaned into straightforward bubblegum sounds, Iijima embraced a 'New Music' sensibility, incorporating chamber-pop strings and early electronic textures that feel timeless rather than dated. Her songs often feel like small, intimate dramas played out against a vast, cinematic backdrop.
For those new to her catalog, the debut album 'Rosé' is the essential starting point. It showcases the perfect marriage of her songwriting and Sakamoto's production. From there, 'Blanche' offers a more mature, polished take on her signature sound. It is the ideal soundtrack for anyone who loves the aesthetic of City Pop but craves a deeper, more introspective emotional core.
