Formed in Poltava in 1988, Freestyle (Фристайл) emerged as a pivotal force in the evolution of post-Soviet pop music. Led by producer and composer Anatoly Rozanov, the group successfully synthesized Western Euro-disco influences with local melodic traditions.
Their early period was defined by the distinctive, emotive vocals of Vadim Kazachenko, whose departure in the early 90s marked a shift toward a more ensemble-based sound featuring Nina Kirso. The group's sound identity is built on a foundation of Roland-style drum machines, lush synth pads, and a 'minor-key' emotional palette that resonates with the cultural concept of 'toska' (melancholy).
