Theatrical, melody-driven rock that balances gothic drama with polished pop hooks. Perfect for late-night city walks and cinematic emotional releases.
Sid creates a sound that is fundamentally cinematic, blending the aggressive energy of early 2000s visual kei with the sophisticated melodic sensibilities of Japanese Showa-era pop. It is music that feels like a high-stakes drama, where every guitar solo is a monologue and every chorus is a climax. The production is gleaming and professional, yet it never loses the underlying grit of a band that cut its teeth in the underground live house circuit.
What sets them apart is Mao's distinctive vocal delivery, which utilizes a heavy, theatrical vibrato and a crooning style rarely seen in modern rock. This is paired with Shinji's guitar work, which often eschews standard power chords for complex, jazz-influenced voicings and fluid, melodic leads. The rhythm section of Aki and Yuuya provides a surprisingly funky foundation, often incorporating slap bass and syncopated drumming that gives the music a danceable, sophisticated edge.
For those new to the band, the 'Hikari' album is the essential starting point. It captures their transition into major-label stardom and contains their most iconic hits, showcasing their ability to write massive, soaring hooks that remain stuck in your head long after the final note fades.
Sid (シド, Shido) (stylized in all caps when romanized) is a Japanese visual kei rock band, formed in 2003 and signed to Ki/oon Records. Formed by Mao, Shinji, Aki and Yūya, they are known for producing anime songs, such as for Fullmetal Alchemist, Bleach, Black Butler, and Magi. Their first album, Renai, was produced with Sakura (ex. L'Arc~en~Ciel). After reaching Oricon chart top 5 for the first time with "Mitsuyubi" (2007), Sid made their major label debut in 2008 with "Monochrome no Kiss" and the gold disc Hikari, which includes one of their most famous songs "Uso". In 2010, they won the Billboard Japan Top Pop Artist award and reached the top of Oricon with Sid 10th Anniversary Best compilation. Later, they also produced songs for other artists, such as LiSA.
