Literary Lviv rock that breathes life into contemporary poetry. Acoustic textures meet a bohemian spirit for rainy days and deep conversations.
Mertvy Piven sounds like the intellectual heart of Lviv captured in amber. Their music is a sophisticated blend of acoustic folk foundations and the restless energy of 90s alternative rock. It carries the scent of old paper, wet cobblestones, and strong coffee, delivered through a vocal style that feels more like a late-night confession than a performance. The arrangements are often surprisingly intricate, utilizing violins and flutes alongside gritty guitars to create a sound that is both earthy and elevated.
What truly distinguishes them is their unwavering commitment to high-brow Ukrainian poetry. Instead of standard rock tropes, they use the verses of Yuri Andrukhovych and Serhiy Zhadan as their lyrical backbone. This creates a unique tension between the raw, sometimes grunge-influenced music and the refined, often surrealist imagery of the words. They are the sound of a culture re-awakening, blending the traditional with the avant-garde in a way that feels entirely organic and unforced.
Start with their debut album 'Eto' to hear their acoustic, prize-winning roots, then move to 'Pisni Mertvoho Pivnya' for a more mature, art-rock exploration of modern poetry. It is essential listening for anyone who wants to understand the soul of the Ukrainian underground scene from the 1990s to today.
Dead Rooster or Mertvy Piven (Ukrainian: Мертвий Півень) is a Ukrainian rock band that was formed by Lyubomyr Futorsky in 1989. The first concert was held in 1990 at the first Vyvykh festival. Their debut album Eto was recorded in 1991, at the end of the Chervona Ruta festival (named for the flower Chervona ruta), where the group took first prize in the category of performers' art songs. Dead Rooster began as an acoustic band. During the second half of the 1990s, they evolved into a grunge/art-rock band, though their music cannot be described by one particular style. Dead Rooster has changed personnel several times. Many of the band's songs used lyrics from Ukrainian poets, including Yuri Andrukhovych, Maksym Rylsky, Oleksandr Irvanets, Viktor Neborak, Yurko Pozayak, Serhiy Zhadan, Natalka Bilotserkivets, Ihor Kalynets and Taras Shevchenko. The album Pisni Mertvoho Pivnya is based on Andrukhovych's poetry collection of the same name. In 2009, their song "Kiss" ("Potsilunok") was featured in the soundtrack of Cold Souls, an American film directed by Sophie Barthes. On May 22, 2023, at the concert "Bird. Serhiy Zhadan and Friends" the band appeared after a 12-year break with new vocalist Yurii Roketskyi.
