宇宙ネコ子

Uchu Nekoko (Universe Cat Child) is a seminal project in the modern Japanese shoegaze and dream pop scene. Formed in 2012 in Kanagawa, the group is led by multi-instrumentalist Nemuko Yamanaka.

Their sound identity is defined by a 'bedroom' approach to high-concept indie rock, blending the wall-of-sound guitar techniques of My Bloody Valentine with the melodic fragility of Shibuya-kei and 90s J-pop. A defining characteristic of the band is their anonymity; they use anime avatars illustrated by Tomoko Oshima to represent themselves, which has become inseparable from their musical brand. This visual-sonic synergy has helped them cultivate a massive international following within the 'lo-fi' and 'internet-core' music communities. Critically, they are praised for their ability to evoke 'mono no aware' - a Japanese term for the pathos of things or a sensitivity to ephemera.
