土岐麻子

Effortlessly cool vocals floating over polished city grooves. It is the sound of metropolitan dusk, blending jazz sophistication with modern pop precision.

Intro

Asako Toki creates music that feels like a perfectly tailored silk shirt: smooth, expensive, and timeless. Her sound is the bridge between the bubble-era nostalgia of 1980s City Pop and the crisp, electronic-tinged sophistication of modern Tokyo. There is an inherent 'cool' to her delivery, a breathy nonchalance that never feels lazy, but rather deeply intentional and refined.

What sets her apart is her lineage and technical foundation. As the daughter of a jazz saxophonist, she treats the pop song structure with a jazz musician's ear for harmony and timing. Her work often features lush arrangements, from shimmering synthesizers to warm brass sections, all serving a vocal style that feels like a whispered secret shared over a cocktail in a high-rise bar.

Newcomers should start with 'Bittersweet' or 'HIGHLIGHT' to hear her at her most iconic. These records showcase her ability to modernize the City Pop aesthetic, offering tracks that are equally suited for a focused solo listen or as the elegant backdrop to an urban evening.

Asako Toki (土岐麻子, Toki Asako; born March 22, 1976) is a Japanese singer-songwriter and lyricist. Born to jazz saxophonist Hidefumi Toki, she was the lead vocalist for the rock band Cymbals between 1997 and 2003. Following Cymbals' breakup, Toki began her solo career with the release of Standards in 2004 and made her major label debut under Avex's Rhythm Zone with Talkin in 2007. To date, she has released nine original albums and eight cover albums, many of which are performed in both Japanese and English. Named the “Queen of City Pop” by publications including Natalie, Toki has been praised for her contemporary interpretation of the genre and her contributions to its revival in the 2010s.
