Gravelly baritone tales of the street and the soul. Gritty Russian chanson that balances criminal underworld grit with the elegance of a city romance.
Alexander Novikov sounds like the weary but unbroken voice of a man who has seen the inside of both a prison cell and a high-end variety theater. His music is built on a foundation of warm, analog instrumentation, often featuring the interplay of acoustic guitars and soulful arrangements that lean into the 'urban romance' tradition. It is music that feels lived-in, smelling of tobacco and expensive cologne, delivered with a baritone that carries the weight of history and personal defiance.
What sets Novikov apart is his refusal to lean into the cartoonish tropes of the 'blatnaya' (criminal) genre. Instead, he treats his subjects with a literary eye, blending the rebellious spirit of rock and roll with the melodic sensibilities of Soviet-era bards. His production often carries a specific clarity, a result of his background in building his own musical equipment, giving his 90s recordings a punchier, more professional edge than many of his lo-fi contemporaries.
Start with the 1984 classic 'Vezi menya, izvozchik'. It is the definitive blueprint for his sound, capturing the tension between the law and the individual. It serves as both a historical artifact of late-Soviet rebellion and a masterclass in the storytelling power of the Russian chanson genre.
