Auktyon (АукцЫон) is a cornerstone of the Leningrad Rock Club and arguably the most musically sophisticated band to emerge from the Soviet underground. Founded by Leonid Fyodorov in 1978, the group evolved from a new wave outfit into a sprawling avant-garde collective.
Their sound identity is defined by a unique synthesis of post-punk, free jazz, and Russian folk motifs, anchored by the surrealist poetry of Dmitry Ozersky and the influence of futurist Velimir Khlebnikov. Unlike their contemporaries who focused on social protest, Auktyon pursued a purely aesthetic and existential revolution, utilizing complex brass arrangements and unconventional time signatures. Their 1990s output, particularly 'Ptitsa' and 'Bodun', solidified their status as critical darlings, blending high-art sensibilities with a wild, Dionysian stage presence. They have collaborated with international avant-jazz luminaries like Marc Ribot and John Medeski, bridging the gap between Russian alternative culture and the global avant-garde. They remain active, continuing to push into improvisational and psychedelic territories.
